Health concerns

I am usually on top of interacting with other blogs, but this current health scare isthDISL6DZD interfering with an ability to communicate. This must appear rude and the blog stats are certainly dwindling fast. It feels heart breaking to watch something so special just slip through my fingers.

I’m worried about my health, very worried, but I feel reluctant to tell anyone just in case it transpires as nothing and I look like a deranged hypochondriac.

I decided that I should chart the medical procedures on my blog, but I really don’t know what direction we will be heading. Allow me to update you on the current progress.

The colonoscopy results can take up to 8 weeks, but if there were any issue in the bowel to cause weight loss, they would’ve seen it on the day.

th50NJ2Z2II initially thought the pounds were shedding due to a small and painful reduction in donuts, ice cream, and medications, although I now appreciate these miniscule amounts would hardly scrape the scales. Nevertheless, following the colonoscopy on the 16th of last month, I decided not to return to the GP, but to spend a week or two pigging-out on all those lovely bad munchies.

Five days into my belly-busting regime, I had a telephone call from the GP asking what I am doing.

“What, right at this minute?”

He always gasps whenever I say something ridiculous, “No,” gasp, “I mean, why haven’t you come to see me?”

“Well, um, I’m taking a week to increase my diet because I’m still pretty certain this is lifestyle related.”

He gasps, “Listen, I can’t discuss this right now, but come see me on Monday morning.”

I made an appointment for Wednesday.

“Mr Cat, you don’t seem to grasp the magnitude of this situation. A weight loss of 2lbs each week has nothing to do with cutting back two or three donuts a week or reducing a miniscule amount of medications.”

“But, I feel too well for this to be anything serious.”

“What?” He gasps, “I don’t think you’ve been too well recently. Your stomach is tender,thTM5GK8FQ you have upper back pain, you look very pale, you’ve complained about fatigue for some time now, and you are losing far_too_much_weight.”

“Then it must be a helluva coincidence, when I cut down on some naughty edibles, the pounds start to drop.”

He gasps, “I am also trying to lose the pounds and I jog three times a week, but I struggle to get anywhere near your weight loss.” He laughs, “If you bottle the secret, you’ll be mega rich.”

I stare in silence, unable to absorb everything he’s saying. It’s so odd to have a Doctor say I have a potential health problem… am I really in trouble? Is this a potential death sentence? I keep the dramatics to myself.

This time he smiles, “I am sorry to be so brutal, but you need to take this seriously. Six months ago, you were 206lbs, but today you are only 171lbs.”

“But, I’m still 17lbs overweight.”

“Yes, but you were originally 35lbs overweight and in about 8 weeks’ time, you’ll be verging on un_der_weight. Can you not understand why I want to move this along quickly?”

My mind has been in a trance ever since, completely distracted from everything. I haveth9UDO182Q two probable situations here. Either I’m right and this is lifestyle related, or I have a BIG problem.

The GP made a referral to see the gastroenterologist. An urgent hospital appointment in the UK can take a couple of weeks. I also have a scan of my pancreas booked for the 12th of this month.

I am starting to question why I have spent so many years allowing past pain and bad family relationships to destroy my life.

Wow, that last sentence is a gut clencher. I have been listening to you, “it’s nothing, I’m not worried. It’s because I went off medication…” I feel really bad that you didn’t feel you could talk about this with me. What are friends for? I’m sitting on the edge of my seat until you can give us more news. Hopefully, good news.

Yeah! I just had my brother die recently, so I right away couldn’t sleep right, couldn’t digest food, couldn’t take a dump… I felt sad, so I got hooked on Chapman’s Camel Pecan, Crunch Yogurt Ice-cream: often downing up to a tub a day! I’ve gone back up to 210 lbs (6′ 2″) from 180 lbs. I don’t think I can quit! Am doomed to be chubby, exercise or not :O(

Lol I thought I was also doomed to be chubby. It’s only in the last 2-3 years when I was overweight. Fingers crossed, this all turns out to be diet. Thanks for your encouragement 🙂

Oh no that has to be scary, especially with your doc being concerned enough to call personally. I hope you get some answers soon and that whatever is going on can be taken care of. ❤️❤️

Hi AM, it is getting a little bit scary and while I’ll be relieved if it turns out to be nothing but lifestyle, I’ll also be annoyed at them for scaring the shit out of me. Thanks for your support, very appreciated

They do that sometimes, make things seem terrible but just do it to be overly cautious. When I was pregnant we were put through the ringer with Baby Girl. Aside from her being on the smaller side, they couldn’t find anything wrong, yet scared the crap out of us, warned us that she could come as early as 23 weeks, ultrasounds every 2-3 weeks, NSTs twice per week, etc and she was fine. In the end it was good they were overly cautious (she had the cord around her neck), but omg.

Take a breath. Worrying will not alter anything, only makes it worse. I know this is easier said than done, but you need to try to find an internal calm until you find the reason for your weight loss. Here’s a positive: your doctor cares enough to call you and urge you to come back in. That type of concern is rare to find, so trust in him/her, and take it as it comes. We’ll be here when you’re ready to disclose results (if you are.)

    Love,

I’ve known this Doc for 16 years but it is only in the last couple of years that we’ve been able to get along. I am trusting him now and being a good boy, doing what I’m told bla de bla. I don’t feel so worried today. Writing it out really does help me to gain a more realistic perspective. Hopefully, it will all turn out to be my lifestyle. The plus side is that I’ve lost all those extra pounds. I’ve only been overweight in the last three years, so that was difficult to carry around and such a pleasure to see my slim body in the mirror again. Thanks. Elizabeth

Reminds me of my own health scare. It was just the most frightening feeling, and I’m so sorry you’re going through similar. Health is one of those things – it can be taken away in an instant. When we never really give it much thought before. I realized how very many people go through what I did and of course much worse, none of whom were to blame, just chance. I’ve realized health ups and downs are part of life. Anyway, I can wax philosophical now, but at the time, it was just overwhelming.

At least you know you’re not hypochondriac, if your doctor is concerned also.

Try not to worry. There are so many reasons for weight loss. Though I suppose you won’t really rest easy until you know the reason. I think what they try to do is rule all the nasty stuff out, so you may be up for some tests.

    Thinking of you Cat.

I’ve thought about your health scare in the last few weeks. Isn’t the fear so unbelievable. I’ve been so healthy, it’s strange to feel like I’m now tittering on the edge between nothing but lifestyle and something more problematic. In many ways, feeling well, somehow makes it seem even worse, especially when I looked on the internet to see why the GP wanted a scan of my pancreas…now, that was scary and probably put me in the frame of mind to write a ‘poor me’ post yesterday.
I’m going to try not to worry too much and be happy that I can recognise my slim body in the mirror again. Thanks Ellen, appreciated 🙂

It’s been going on now for about 4 weeks, but it’s just in the last week when I’ve started to become concerned. They could be wrong and maybe I am right and there is no problem. Never mind, at least it’s like a full MOT and in my early 50’s, that’s not such a bad thing. Thanks for the hugs and support 🙂

I’m really glad you’re sharing this with us, Cat. You need the support of those who care about you right now. Should it turn out to be nothing? Awesome! And I won’t for a second consider you a hypochondriac. (btw I love that image!) We all feel powerless when we’re told there might be something bad going on that could change the course of our life. So thanks for making us know that it’s okay to be vulnerable, and reaching out for support is a good thing. We love you Cat. How could we not?

I had a cardiac scare a couple years ago when I was issued a next day appointment to see a cardiologist after an echocardigram (heart sonogram) I’m only 32. Turns out it was nothing and the specialist didn’t even know why he was seeing me. Different doctors take things a different amount of seriously. I hope this is just them over reacting. I have GI problems and as a kid lost a lot of weight/couldn’t maintain weight it was ulcerative colitis and other than fatigue, stomach pain, and some bleeding it wasn’t too serious. It’s back again but this n=time no weight loss 😦 Anyways sorry for the rambling and wish you good or manageable news.

Oh Cat, this post made my heart sink and my stomach rise. I can’t imagine what’s going through your mind. I’m not a doctor, but losing 35 lbs in 6 months is not considered rapid weight loss. Two lbs a week is considered a safe weight loss. Back in the 90’s I took an antidepressant for situational depression. I quickly gained 40 lbs. When I discontinued it, I quickly lost the weight without changing my diet. Everybody has a different metabolism, so it’s not always best to compare ones weight loss with another as your doctor did.

I’m really glad to know you are getting a thorough medical checkup. You seem to have a good doctor. There could be many non-life threatening reasons why you have upper back pain and a tender stomach. As hard as it might be, try not to think the worst.

    Keeping you in my thoughts.

    (((hug))) ❤

Hi Victoria… I have disputed with my GP and Consultant about this being lifestyle, but they don’t agree with the weight loss. According to them, 1-2lbs is a healthy weight loss IF someone is working to achieve that or comes off a particular med completely. I was only reducing the meds by miniscule amount and stopped the reduction 5 weeks ago, but the weight kept dropping and then I spent those 2 weeks eating all the naughty things again, but that didn’t make any difference either… that’s when I started to feel worried. I’ve only been overweight in the last 3 years. previously I was always a constant 154lbs. It’s lovely to see me in the mirror again without the blubber 🙂 I also walk with a walking stick and have been moving with a lot more ease in recent days, so I must work hard to keep the weight down. Fingers crossed this will all turn out to be nothing other than something to make me appreciate life again. Thanks Victoria for your kind words of support. How are you?

Hey Cat, I can understand your concern, but I’m still going to be hopeful that it’s your body wanting to get back to it’s normal weight. Also, chronic stress can cause inflammation in your abdomen causing it to be tender. Cortisol, the stress hormone inhibits insulin production in an attempt to prevent glucose from being stored, favoring its immediate use. This could also explain the weight loss. I know from personal experience. I don’t mean to seem like I’m trying to minimize that your condition could be serious. It’s just that I’ve have a few scares myself and it was the doctors who scared me, not the final prognosis.

I went to have a routine breast exam and the doctor found a lump. So they did a mammogram and the doctor, my OBGYN, looked at it and said I should be concerned as it (the tumor or cyst) was irregular, which was indicative of cancer. Well, they scheduled a lumpectomy and I had to wait 2 agonizing weeks for that surgery. Then I had to wait two days for the biopsy results. In the meantime I was so scared I had a Will drawn up. I had a small child at the time. Now, normally I wouldn’t have gotten so scared but my doctor made it seem like a death sentence, body language and all. As it turned out, it was not malignant. It wasn’t even serious — not even a potential malignancy.

How am I doing? Being onery as usual. 😉

Yes, I’ve had several scares by doctors when it turned out to be nothing serious. Seems that your weight loss started around the time you began this therapy program. I know that it’s been a very trying, stressful time for you.

I know that my husband had upper back pain until he had his Gall Bladder removed, but that was found out by a colonoscopy. I’ve always been told that losing 2lb a week was a sign of healthy weight loss, especially seeing that you’ve cut so much of the food that makes those extra pounds. Have you done any of your own research on the Internet?

Hi Glynis, yes, 1-2 lbs is a healthy weight loss and I’ve disputed this with the Docs. They say it’s only healthy if we’re doing something to lose the pounds. In reality I’ve only cut out 4 donuts each week and a choc ice cream at night. I also walk with a stick, so my exercise stays constant on a weekly basis, although I do walk a lot with the dog. Docs are not always right, but I’ll be a bit pissed off if they’ve worried me unnecessarily. At least I will have had all the tests under the sun and in my early 50’s that can only be a good thing.

I have researched some things on the net but had to stop because it only made me worry more. It’s good they are moving things along quickly, I will know one way or another by the end of the month. Thank you, Glynis, this helps 🙂 Is hubby back at work now?

        He starts back today. Whoopee!
Depending on how much, a bowl of ice cream can contain 300 to 400 calories. Donuts, just the plain cake ones, have a little over 200 calories each. I walk with a cane too. It actually takes more effort to walk with one than without one so you’re getting a little more exercise than you think. Yes, there could be something terribly wrong with your health. I’m just surprised that the doc is doing so many tests when you say you’re feeling fine.

I know zilch about calories and weight, which made it all the more complicated. I weighed a 2lb bag of rice yesterday and couldn’t believe I have actually lost about 14 of them, or more…. no wonder I am walking a little better! Cane-walking can be tiring and I am actually quite physically fit. I feel the loss is slowing down now, which would match my original theory of it being lifestyle. I’ll be a little pissed off with the Docs if I’ve worried over nothing. Never mind, next week will answer all questions.

I hope you’re enjoying your new sense of freedom, I can just imagine. Thanks Glynis

I’m so sorry about your health worries and torment as to what is causing this rapid weight loss.

God might be invisible but you’re not. He sees your pain and fears and wants to help you. But he won’t force his way into your life, you have to cry out to him. He sees you lying in the dark staring straight ahead into nothingness, feeling numb and confused. He wants to give you peace. And healing.

Dont get mad when you don’t hear an audible voice – he’s speaking to you in many other ways.
He promised, “I will not leave you comfortless. I will come to you.”
This doctor is a blessing from above to be so concerned about one of his patients. It is encouraging to know he is looking out for you and he is aware of some of your fears.

Everything happens for a reason and maybe, this could be a jolt to make you think about eternity as we are all eventually going to die of something – I am not saying you are going to die or be terminally ill – I want you to get better. I just mean that health scares are sometimes good because it makes us sit up and realise that we need to be assured of where we are going when we do die.

See it as a blessing that you have time to prepare your heart. Some people have no time at all, with detrimental consequences.
They leave the house and die in a car crash, train collision, a shooting, bomb explosion or have a heart attack.
But you have been given a chance to ponder your heart state and make things right. It’s something we all have to do.

Sorry for the essay but ‘Wounds from a sincere friend is better than the kisses from an enemy.’ Proverbs 27:6
